A Message From “The Family”: On Eating Disorders

Mister Rand has long suffered from what is termed an “eating disorder,” in his case the compulsion to eat more than his body requires especially of carbohydrates, sugars, and fat-laden proteins. As a result, he has developed a deformity of the torso that weighs him down and  prevents him, he thinks, from finding love and acceptance from others whose opinions he cherishes.

Eating disorders are, as we see it, at core, disorders of the heart chakra, and they can come in many forms, such as compulsive overeating and vomiting; compulsive undereating and self-starvation; and compulsive exercising and dieting. To bring these disorders into balance, it is necessary for the sufferer to identify the core need, which is love; and to develop strategies for opening the heart both to Divine Love and to human love as well.

In the Twelve Step group “Overeaters Anonymous,” there is a series of contemplative exercises designed to accomplish just the sort of heart opening to which we refer. At root, they involve:

(1) admission of powerlessness over the addictive urge when it strikes;

(2) acknowledging that Divine Love exists and is eager to relieve any and all self-harm compulsions if that is what the sufferer truly wishes;

(3) a commitment by the sufferer to placing one’s will and life into the loving care of the Divine Healer on a daily basis;

(4) listing all the ways  one’s pain and loneliness have manifested in waking life;

(5) breaking silence by sharing this list with another human being;

(6) agreeing, one day at a time, to permitting the Divine Healer complete access to one’s innermost core being, for the purpose of adjusting one’s attitudes and actions so that they reflect our beauty rather than our pain;

(7) performing a ritual in which one formally invites Divine Healer access to one’s core;

(8) making a list of any persons we have harmed, and becoming willing to make amends to them all;

(9) making amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others;

(10) working daily to keep one’s heart open to the Divine Healer’s correction when one acts towards others out of a consciousness level of force, threat, and blame rather than the consciousness levels of  acceptance with intent to learn, understanding, giving, loving, and knowing that one is intrinsically whole;

(11) communing consciously with the Divine Healer on a daily basis, so that we may receive the daily power and blessings that Divine Love wishes to pour upon us; and

(12) offering oneself as a channel of Divine Love to other sufferers on a daily basis as opportunities arise.

It is vital to recognize that the process of recovering from eating disorders cannot take place in isolation: one must become so sick of being sick that one is willing to ask for help, despite one’s shame and inner accusers. This is why Mister Rand attends a Twelve Step meeting designed for compulsive overeaters; he has found, over time, his fear of being seen and harmed by others has diminished considerably owing to the consistent, nonintrusive love shown him by other members of the group.

Furthermore, any healing of the heart results in increased awareness of feelings, inevitably including feelings one does not wish to feel, such as shame, fear, resentment, anger, and other responses to the illusion that one is starving emotionally. A daily choice must be made to allow these feelings to come to consciousness, and to use various tools, such as writing and sharing verbally with others one can trust, for the purpose of acknowledging these feelings and releasing them on a daily basis into the love of the Divine Healer. For it is the Divine Healer alone Who can repair the damaged heart chakra; bring peace, love, and resilience to the emotional body; and silence the voice of the inner accuser who calls Mister Rand a failure and a troll.

A Message From “The Family”: On the Purpose of Things

Thought forms are born, swell into importance, leave stains on the fabric of reality owing to the passions fueling them, and subside, becoming whispers on the winds that blow continually through the mental worlds of the  astral plane. Nobody asks, “What is the purpose of thoughts?” Thoughts come and go, arise and subside, give birth to other thoughts or to suspension thereof; Thought just is. Why, then, when speaking of  life in physical reality, do individuals seek obsessively for the purpose of such life? Is it not enough that  Life simply is; that seasons, like thought-forms, come and go; that love, death, birth, marriage, sickness, recovery, travel, fellowship, and creative endeavours simply arise and fall like waves of the ocean.

“Why am I here?” is one of Humanity’s great agonized cries. Yet as we see it from the Plane of Light and Sound, asking, “What is my life purpose?” is as meaningless as  “What is the purpose of the color blue?” Blue just is, that is all; life just is. That is to say, life is intrinsically valuable. It does not need a purpose, goal, or achievement to give it meaning and worth.

Mister Rand’s father was a world famous novelist at one point in human history. It is not what he set out to become, and he is virtually forgotten in America today. As we see things, what is important is not whether Mister Rand’s father had a great effect on human history, although in fact his work continues to resonate throughout the subgenre of literary entertainments known as crime fiction; but whether Mister Rand’s father enjoyed the experience. For it is the experience of hardness, softness, cold, heat, excitement, ennui, hate, love, redness, purpleness, travel, imprisonment that gives life its meaning and purpose.

By this thinking, therefore, there can be no such thing as failure. Mister Rand has frequently felt like a failure because he has not succeeded in becoming a famous writer like his father (he gives us permission to write this here, though he is not particularly happy about our having done so). But that very internal experience of self-disappointment, self-comparison, and self-appraisal is intrinsically valuable, because experience is growth, and growth is what all life seeks to embrace, whether in physical reality, thought reality, the physical planning state, the dream state, the nonphysical planning state, the plane of light and sound, the plane of the greater self, or the plane of the One.

“Why should the experience of growth be more valuable to the One,” asks Mister Rand, “than the experience of non-growth?” He asks this in order to make trouble for us <laughter>. All we can reply is, “Because it is.”

On Chance As A Face of God

stained_glass_spiralA good friend gave me an intriguing Christmas present today, a book entitled, The Improbability Principle: Why Coincidences, Miracles, and Rare Events Happen Every Day. The author is David J. Hand, emeritus professor of mathematics and a senior research investigator at Imperial College London. His book aims to explain, via statistics, how the uncertainty that lies at the core of Nature gives rise to statistically mappable, wildly improbable, seemingly miraculous events. “The universe has laws which describe the way it works,” writes Hand, “… The same applies to exceedingly unlikely events. The Improbability Principle is my name for a set of laws of chance which, together, tell us that we should expect the unexpected, and why.” Some seeming improbabilities arise, Hand says, from “fundamental aspects of the way the universe is constructed;” others, from “deep properties of what we mean by probability;” still others, from the mechanism of the human brain as it expresses itself in human psychology. Events that we deem improbable, says Hand, only seem so because of errors in our research or thinking; once those errors are corrected, the improbable is revealed as probable.

Probability interests me, because as a psychic, I’m in the business of sussing out the probable for clients. A client comes to me and asks me what her chances are of finding a loving partner through (let’s say) Match.com. I throw the cards and they say, “Success!”, or “NO way,” or “Um, it might work, but…” If you stop the reading there, you leave the client more or less a victim of fate. But if you ask, “Why is success predicted here?”, or, “Why is this absolutely the wrong approach for her?”, or, “What can she do to maximize her chances of making this work?”, then you get information the client can really learn from and use to make decisions that will load the deck in her favor.

I am severely challenged mathematically, so I cannot and probably never will be able to give you a fair assessment of his research, thinking, or worldview. From a cursory flip through the material, however, it seems clear that, as a statistician, he is convinced that everything has an explanation consonant with mathematics and impersonal physical law. In other words, from Hand’s viewpoint, the fact that you happened to get a client who paid you by PayPal the very day you had run out of money for food was not the result of a supernatural entity answering your previous evening’s pleas for cash, it was the logical outcome of a complex series of events, some of which you had a conscious part in (such as having sent out a Thanksgiving card to all your clients wishing them a good year ahead), some of which had to do with the time of year (post-Christmas letdown), some of which had to do with that client’s choices and circumstances (end of year stimulates desires for a new start), and some of which were entirely accidental. According to this view, then, your getting paid right when you needed it most was not therefore necessarily evidence that a loving Higher Power exists who responds to your pragmatic needs when asked, but only that, sooner or later, given your many years in the psychic business and your wide reputation, it was inevitable that some client would have called you at some point after Christmas, and it just happened to be on the day you needed the moolah. So this would make my attributing these events to a loving Higher Power not the result of faith rewarded or intuition triumphant, but fantasy thinking arising from my very human need to imagine an Invisible Sky Daddy who will take care of me when I am in trouble.

On the other hand, one of the Major Trumps of the Tarot deck is The Fool, which in my experience represents serendipity—chance—as one of the faces of God; that is, chance as one of the ways Divine Love expresses itself in spacetime. The laws of probability and improbability are built into the mechanism of spacetime by the great consciousness of All-That-Is, Who exists both within and outside of spacetime simultaneously (since spacetime is an expression of Itself). So everything about me—when I was born, the family into which I was born, the troubles that led me to get involved in psychic work, the clients I’ve attracted, my difficulty saving money, my making myself available to Spirit, my asking for some cash, the souls I connect with as clients, what happens next week, what happens when I die—while not predetermined, can nonetheless be seen outside of time by the Divine as a complete, fully faceted, jewel of event and experience bound together as the artwork that is me, in this life, this time around.

Or maybe not. •

A Message From “The Family”: On Walkers, Talkers, and Watchers

When individuals expand their presence into Physical Reality from the Dream State, they have several options from which to choose in determining how they are to create experience here. We call these options Walkers, Talkers, and Watchers.

Walkers are those who comfellow_travelerse into Physical Reality for a specific focused purpose: to contribute in some way to the overall balance, progress, or limiting of human, animal, or mineral life here. Walkers often live for a designated period of time in order to accomplish the focused task or enjoy/suffer the specifically desired experience, then leave Physical Reality when this task is done. Examples of Walkers are the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Lee Harvey Oswald, Pope Francis I, President Barack Obama, Marie Curie, Amy Goodman, Mother Theresa, Bill Gates.

Talkers are those who come into Physical Reality to create private personal experiences for themselves primarily. These are individuals who are seeking to balance their total incarnational experience or expand it into new areas which they have not yet enjoyed. Talkers are not “less spiritual” than Walkers; their focus is simply different. Examples of Talkers are difficult to come by because by definition Talkers do not usually figure on the public or world stage. One example of a Talker whose private experience includes celebrity is performer Lindsay Lohan.

Watchers are individuals who enter Physical Reality primarily to observe the experiences here and share their observations with the Divine Love that gives rise to, permeates, and supports all realities. Watchers are often solitaries, invisible to most people, shunning the limelight. They contribute to the overall balance of All-That-Is through their careful noticing of the things people do in Physical Reality. They may end up as older individuals puzzled by their lack of spectacular success or spectacular failure, or they may simply be considered by others to be unmotivated. However, most of the time they possess a quiet capacity for empathy and insight that Walkers and Talkers may not possess.

If you are a Walker, ask yourself, “How do I want most to serve the world?” If you are a Talker, ask yourself, “How do I want most to serve myself?” If you are a Watcher, ask yourself, “What arouses my curiosity the most right now?”

Remember that whether one is a Walker, Talker, or Watcher, the level of consciousness upon which one primarily resides while going through the joys and hardships Physical Reality affords very much affects how others perceive you and how you enjoy or loathe the world around you. For one can contribute to the world’s harmony by doing good, doing evil, or doing nothing in particular at all. Everything depends upon what, deep down, gives you the most sense of integrity, peace, happiness, pleasure, or intensity. A Walker operating on the consciousness level of To Force may have been called into Physical Reality by the mass consciousness to play a violent role in history. A Talker operating on the consciousness level of To Force may end up as a spouse, child, or animal abuser. A Watcher operating on the consciousness level of To Force may spend years thinking ill of or castigating herself for not accomplishing more in the world, not having enough ambition. Such a Watcher may end up being victimized (from the human viewpoint), but she does not become a victim primarily for the sake of her private incarnational experience. She does it primarily for the sake of the One Whose passion for understanding Itself drives and motivates all tangible creation.

Are you a Walker, a Talker, or a Watcher? Perhaps it is not important to know; or, as Mister Rand feels, perhaps labeling oneself in these ways limits freedom of expression and flexibility of self-assessment. For in the end, all Walkers, however committed to responding to the mass consciousness’s call to affect society at large, also along the way have experiences that benefit themselves alone; all Talkers, however absorbed in private experiences, also have an effect on the experiences of those around them; and all Watchers, however sidelined apparently by life, also create experiences to enjoy privately along the way of their observing. So do not judge yourself. Walkers are not spiritually superior to Talkers; Watchers are not spiritually superior to Walkers. “Inferior” and “superior” are not terms the Greater Self understands.

A Message From “The Family”: On Ghosts, Aliens, Spirit Guides and Hauntings, Part 2: Spirits of Action, Support, and Communion

Hubble_snow_angelNothing matters to humans but life and death. We are speaking of physical life and physical death. Mister Rand has struggled all his life with terror of death, ever since early childhood, when he encountered the shredded corpses of his pet rabbits strewn across the lawn of his childhood home. Nothing is more terrifying to him, and to many humans, than the thought of dying alone and unloved, under painful and lonesome circumstances.

He is a Pisces, and prone to such extremes of thought. In response to his fears we say, “You are safe. Everyone is safe. At root, Love is unconquerable, immutable, the force that binds all the realities together in a whirling balance of constant expansion. Yet no matter how many changes develop in physical reality, including changes that bring unimaginable pain to those involved in them, there are agents of Love waiting to bring consolation to the sufferer.”

And so Mister Rand need not fear a lonely death. As he has been present at the deaths of his beloved dogs, so will his spiritual guides attend his transformation back into his truest Self.

We continue to describe  some of these spiritual agents or helpers by examin[ing] Spirits of Action, Support, and Communion.

Spirits of Action: Spirits of Action are spirit helpers called in to assist a human with decisions, transitions, and exertion[s]. Like the angels who came in disguise to the door of Lot in the Bible, so these beings can take the forms of humans. So it is true what the Bible says when it asserts, “We entertain angels unawares.” Some such spirits temporarily inhabit the energy fields of living humans, who agree to speak and act to help the human in need. Whenever a person requires events to take a specific turn, angels of action appear to encourage that person to take the necessary action to bring the desired result about. Such spirits of action can take the form of books, or words spoken by teachers, or therapists, or twelve step individuals, or simply make themselves felt as powerful urges to do this or to do that.

Spirits of Support help individuals connect to their “tribe,” that is, their circle of support systems who are energetically and emotionally and intellectually and evaluatively able to help that individual find resources for achieving his or her goals in physical reality. The Greek god Eros, or Cupid in Roman myth, was a depiction of just such a spirit; but Cupid is not simply an agent to bring lovers together. He is also an agent for bringing “likers” together—platonic soulmates, if you will. For the divine heart of love can take many different forms within the context of physical experience. Spirits of support can also assist humans in getting practical needs met such as finding a new home, or connecting to a new teacher, or finding the counseling support or spiritual support that person requires at this particular time in his or her life.

There is truth to the New Testament statement attributed to Jesu, and that is, “You ask not and therefore you have not;” and in Jesu’s statement, “Ask and keep on asking and you shall receive; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened; seek and keep on seeking and [you shall] find.” For the verbs used in these statements [as they appear in the King James Bible] are not translated correctly for English. In the ancient common [koiné] Greek of Jesu’s day, the verb can take not only a simple present form—I am seeking or I seek—but it can also take what is called by grammarians a continuing present form: I am [continually] seeking. And this is an important difference.

Why does Spirit require one to keep on seeking? Is that because Spirit has limited resources and does not wish to give us help unless we beg for it? We do not see things this way. One must keep on asking, seeking, and knocking in order to overcome inner resistance to receiving what [we]claim [we] desire (but may not deep down actually desire). So persistence in asking, seeking, and knocking puts out into the multiverse a strong probability line attraction—as long as the individual seeking, asking, and knocking is not afraid of the consequences of getting what she or he says she or he wants.

Spirits of Communion are spirits summoned with messages from the Greater Self to the physicalized self; or, if you prefer in your symbol system, messages from your inner self to your conscious self. These messages are not simply information, however. They are experiences of communion with the Divine Heart of Love, and they do not come at a summons or calling. They well up within the seeker as the result of the seeker staying in the heart center and practising acceptance with intent to learn. Such spirits can also come in dreams of a loved one consoling the dreamer, or as passages in a religious text which “jump out at you” as people say. Mister Rand has even experienced such communion while getting out of his seat in a 12 step meeting in a state of complaint over not  understanding or feeling the presence of a Grater or Higher Self. Once such a message, which is a complete meme that is not easily expressed in linear terms, is felt by the individual, it is almost never forgotten, even if the bliss the spirit of communion conveys fades from the emotional body.

To Know That One Already Has

gleeTo Know That One Already Has is the tenth and most creative level of consciousness available to beings in physical reality.  It is a divine state of sureness in which one knows that one possesses everything one needs, has needed, and will ever need to overflow with happiness, safety, and joy. I know it is possible to experience such a level of consciousness while still in physical reality because I experienced such a state once, during a vision that came to me while I was working as office assistant to an environmental lawyer (see my blog entitled “To Love”). In this vision I felt suspended in a sea of light which knew me utterly, supported me without question, and desired nothing from me. At that instant I felt safe for the first time in my life, and I burst into tears of relief. At that instant, I knew that I already possessed everything I needed for happiness and joy. I felt complete.

It was not a state in which I was able to remain. I was and am still too bound up with my force, threat, and blame wounds to do that. But I know that, having experienced once, the consciousness of my completeness remains within me available to me again when I am ready for it.

Since I had this experience I have run into other people who have had it, too. Some of them have experienced it while on drugs; others, in meditation. Many religions report mystics,  saints, and devotees experiencing such states of completion, and record the ecstasies that arise from the experience of such states.

The state of knowing that one already has is, I believe, our true state. It is a deep state of rest. And that is why some mystics, saints, and devotees can demonstrate, while still in the physical body, acts of divine compassion and apparent self-sacrifice. I say “apparent” because, when one has achieved awareness of one’s essential completeness and safety, one knows, deep down in one’s core, that food, clothing, status, money, physical possessions, even the body itself, are not who one really is. They are accompaniments, adornments, temporarily useful perhaps, but ultimately releasable because I recognize the real me already possesses—and always will possess—deepest, eternal safety within the Divine Heart of Love.

Self-sacrifice that arises from the consciousness That One Already Has is very different from self-sacrifice that arises from force, threat, or blame. Force, threat, and blame triggered self-sacrifice is an act of violence against the self, a decision to deny oneself what one needs for happiness and joy so that others will prosper instead. And such self-sacrifice is invariably accompanied by buried resentment. Psychologists sometimes call a pattern of resentful self-sacrifice “codependency“: an addictive pattern of denying myself what I need in hopes that my giving to another will prompt him or her to give me what I need.

And so the cycle of self-examination continues, leading me back again and again to the necessity To Accept With Intent To Learn, so that I might Understand Physically, Understand Spiritually, Give myself what I need, and ultimately Know That I Already Have everything I require for happiness and joy: Love Itself, Who is eternal, changeless, undiminishable, and intensely, supremely personal.

To Love

It is a level of consciousness that is firmly rooted in all the levels of consciousness that have come before it. In order To Love, one must learn To Accept, To Understand, and To Give oneself what one needs in order To Give to others from an overflow of safety, contentment, and strength (rather than self-sacrificial starvation). For I firmly believe that only when one has been deeply nourished can one possess the strength of self required for truly loving others.

What do I mean by “love” in this context? On a human level, To Love means To Accept As Kin: to accept and treat another as though he or she were a member of one’s own family, a brother or a sister (always bearing in mind that such acceptance does not permit others to treat us with force, threat or blame).

On a nonmaterialist level, To Love means to open oneself entirely to God, to Goddess, to Spirit, to Goodness and Truth Itself. Such love involves the willingness to be totally transparent to scrutiny, because one has accepted and understood oneself in all one’s parts, wounds, limitations, and patterns. When one risks such transparency before God, one can find oneself overwhelmed by a sense of divine love so powerful it can reduce us to tears.

This has actually happened to me. Many years ago I worked as an office assistant to an environmental lawyer who was a devotee of the Hindu mystic Mother Meera. I’d been doing psychic work for many years, but I was in a vulnerable place, having recently lost my lover to suicide, my beloved younger brother to AIDS, and my mother to alcoholism. I was not (and am not) a Hindu, but what I knew of Mother Meera I liked very much; she seemed genuinely kind and giving, a clear channel for grace to those who came to her in Germany for her sessions of silent darshan.

One day, when I was typing away on my IBM Selectric, I heard my boss talking on the phone with Mother Meera’s righthand woman, Adelakshmi. Suddenly I heard him exclaim, “Mother!”, in a delighted voice: Mother Meera had broken into their conversation via a third phoneline, something she rarely did. The moment I heard my boss say Meera’s name, an odd and wonderful thing happened.

I was aware of my body sitting there at the keyboard, and of my boss’s voice talking to Meera over the phone. But simultaneously I felt suspended in a vast sea of light, an ocean that was pure consciousness and personally aware of me. That ocean knew me down to my smallest particle, supported me unreservedly and without question, and—most wondrous of all—desired nothing from me in return, because it needed nothing, being complete within itself. I had never experienced unconditional love before, and I wept uncontrollably sitting there at my typewriter in that environmental law office.

The experience faded, as such numinous experiences usually do. But the memory of it has never faded. I know what unconditional love feels like, and my experience of it has enabled me—rarely, to be sure, and not without considerable vacillation—to have moments in which I have been enabled to show unconditional love to others. And I believe that only by experiencing the divine heart of love in this way can we be raised to the most creative level of consciousness of all: To Know That One Already Has.
